Château de Suronde, not just another wine estate.
We are excited to announce the revival of Château de Suronde, the iconic and magical wine estate in the Loire Valley. This historic estate produces dry and sweet wines made of Demeter grapes from 7 hectares of biodynamic vineyard of 15-70 year old vines, 100% Chenin Blanc. Of those, 5.5 hectares are Quarts de Chaume Appellation, the only Grand Cru in the Loire Valley. Suronde is located in the heart of the Quarts de Chaume appellation, at Les Quarts precisely.
The estate has been acquired in 2016 by Kathleen Van den Berghe and Sigurd Mareels, the Belgian owners of Château de Minière.
Château de Suronde produces white wines from Chenin Blanc that can be sweet, semi-sweet and dry.
Suronde produces both the iconic sweet Quarts de Chaume wines. But also the Coteaux du Layon wine, with lower sugar concentration than the Quarts de Chaume wines. And than there is the range of dry white wine, with a range of minerality versus fruitiness.
The sweet Loire wines are made of Chenin Blanc and have a remarkable acidity to balance the natural sweetness, resulting in very balanced wines that pair wonderfully well with a wide range of food, and allowing the wines to age for several decades.
Both Château de Minière and Château de Suronde are magical estates in the middle of each vineyard, surrounded by nature and shaped by the Loire and the Layon rivers. Both properties breathe history and the vineyards are quintessential terroir locations.
Biodynamic
Château de Suronde has been organic for more than 20 years and the biodynamic practices have been restarted in 2017. The wine is made of Demeter grapes from our biodynamic vineyards. The estate also has 10ha of garden, farmland and forests, which creates a wonderful biodiversity. Ideal to create healthy ripe grapes, and noble rot grapes in the best years.
The wines are made in the vineyard, through careful work and attention throughout the year, observation and selective intervention of biodynamic practices. Thus we create the ideal environment for the grapes to ripen to optimal ripeness for either dry or sweet wines.
A creative place
Château de Suronde proposes “a magical wine experience”. It is a place of creation. Besides the grapes and the wine, we will also produce our own biodynamic plants for use in the vineyard, and other biodynamic produce. Château de Suronde is also a creative place for artists, offering a residence to visual artists, writers and musicians.
Belgian artists are selected by the renowned Belgian curator Sven Vanderstichelen for artist residences in Château de Suronde. Each year artworks created at Suronde are selected to feature on the new vintage labels.
